The 1st Gluten Free Makeup List of 2013

The Gluten Free Makeup List

by Afton Jones on January 2, 2013

Well folks, here it is! The very first Gluten Free Makeup List of 2013!

Navigating the conflicting world of gluten free makeup can be a real challenge. With no regulations setting the standard for gluten free makeup, no two companies mean the same thing when they claim their products are “gluten free”. Do they really mean “gluten free”? Or do they mean “oh, it’s only a tiny bit of gluten that can’t hurt you”. If you have reactions to topical gluten, or are a Celiac looking to minimize your exposure to gluten, this can be a very dangerous issue. Who can you trust to tell the truth?

The Gluten Free Makeup List is a compilation of all the companies I have found that are safely gluten free.

I set high standards and grill companies mercilessly to ensure that their products are as safe as possible. Updating quarterly,  this is the safest and most comprehensive gluten free makeup list on the web.

It’s not a massive update, but there are a few important details to take note of…

  1. A very large company has been officially added- NARS Cosmetics! They have been approved for the gluten free makeup list because of their entire line being gluten free. They even test, albeit occasionally and not consistently. Still, some testing is better than none and it’s really nice to know that I can run into a makeup store and just grab something without fear.
  2. A rather large company has been officially removed from the list due to some frightening and angering information an eagle-eyed reader just shared with me. Either the company has changed their policies since they were added, was outright lying, or they subscribe to one of the most dangerous and doubtful practices I know of. Expect a full post on that later. In the meantime, if you were sharp-eyed enough to know which brand it was that I removed, comment below and tell me!

Arbonne isn’t on the latest list.

DING DING we have a winnah!

    Sadly… Yes it is. :(

As it turns out, some of the products on their current “gluten free list” have wheat protein in them. The FC5 line is the #1 offender, but there may be others as well. Arbonne makes it extremely difficult to find their ingredients, but an eagle-eyed reader found them anyway and spotted the wheat.

I’ll be writing a full length post pretty quick about it, so will leave the full length soapbox speech to that. I’m just so frustrated and angry about this. Seriously Arbonne??

Wow. That IS frustrating. I can’t believe that. It’s this kind of negligent misrepresentation of “gluten-free” that makes it so hard for celiacs to trust anything. I wish there were better regulations for gluten free (in the FDA as well as cosmetics)! Even more than that, I wish all companies were required to list ALL their ingredients and sources. Why are they allowed to hide them? It’s just ridiculous!!

      • http://www.glutenfreemakeupgal.com/ The Gluten Free Makeup Gal

It is! That kind of ignorance and/or excuse making means only one thing: Arbonne cares more about the money than the person. Not that there’s anything wrong with making money… I mean we all need to live. Just NOT at the expense of others.

Better regulations would be AWESOME. Not the 20ppm rule though, even the FDA knows that won’t be good enough for very sensitive Celiacs. That’s just so that companies can cut corners and get in on the market. But say, <5ppm (the lowest we can currently test for)? That would be incredible.

    So, where is the list?

    • http://www.glutenfreemakeupgal.com/ The Gluten Free Makeup Gal

Oh dear, I have never considered that mobile sites can’t see the signup form… You can see it on the full site in the sidebar, or on the front page. But give me a moment and I’ll put the form in the post as well.

Thanks so much for your comment! You alerted me to a very frustrating issue for readers. :)

Have you had a chance to add a list for mobile access yet? I still don’t see one. Thanks so much for all you do for those of us who need to avoid gluten. I’m a native Texan as well as are all my mother’s side of my family. You’re just one more reason Texas is such a great state! :)

Whoops! Sorry ’bout that! I thought I’d already done it? lol Anyway, there it is. :)

Texans unite! WOOT! And thanks so much. <3
